Yokomo MR4-BX

The MR4-BX is the pinnacle of yokomos many years of 4wd competition. Starting over 20 years ago with the chain driven YZ-834b "Dogfighter" which was gear driven to the rear wheels with a chain to the front, driving a spool front diff with one-way bearings in the hubs. Then the 1988 belt driven YZ870c "Super Dogfighter" with more modern twin belt front and rear to ball differentials.

The MR4-BX follows a recent trend back toward saddle pack layouts where the weight can be better balanced and centralised.The assembled BX car looks a little similar to the YMP (Yokomo Miracle car Products) mid motor conversion for the MX4 which was made by Masaki Hirosaka and never really sold outside of Japan. That car used a central motor with saddle pack configuration, all in the then fashionable silver surface (ssg) carbon fibre.The MR4BC Special superceeded the MX4 as Yokomos top line racer and had some good success in the hands of some talented drivers, but the car wasn't as successful in the hands of most people being a very lively car. The BX is all new however, there is nothing borrowed from previous cars, from the ground up this car is new and ready for competition at the highest level

The Yokomo MR4-BX comes in a larger than average box with built-in carry handle, decorated in a carbon fibre effect with chrome writing, very aesthetically pleasing and swish.Inside the box, everything is laid out, nothing fancy, just large bags filled with smaller numbered stage-bags, some wheels and a body parts, no tyres are supplied. There is even a little spare room inside the box.The manual in my early kit was entirely in Japanese but with excellent diagrams which make it fairly easy to assemble with a little experience. No decals or window masks are supplied in the kit.

In the year XII - Xray XII 1/12th scale

Rumours about a possible 1/12 scale on-road car from Slovakian manufacturer Xray had been around for a while now but it was at last years on-road World Championship in Thailand when the first prototype cars hit the public road.
Pictures of the XII named car have been rare before the actual event although some spy shots floated around the internet showing that the first ever 1/12 scale car from Xray was very likely of a conventional ‘T-bar’ design with a rather large and ‘brushless-friendly’ power pod. Come the WC the secret was revealed and Xray factory driver Teemo Leino set some very impressive practice times with the orange toned XII. Information on a release date had not been given at that time but rumour had it that the pan car was due to be production ready by the beginning of 2009.

Team Magic E4 Concept...

You may remember back from the iHobby show, we wrote about the new Team Magic E4 electric touring car. We were quite harsh about its 3 belt system and centrally mounted batteries and likened to a 1/10th 200mm gas car with an electric motor in it. Well that opinon hasn’t changed but these studio pictures from the Taiwanese manufacturer definitely show this car in a new light and i’m starting to like the look of it, look at how low it is….nice.

Looking at the pictures though also highlights a few issues with the E4, like the fact that the speed controller position looks like an after thought, mounted on the pinion side of the motor.

Serpent S240 1/24th Scale Chassis

As shown on Red RC on Tuesday, Serpent had lots of new products on their booth this year including the new S240 and the S120. Unfortunately the S500 electric 4wd buggy is not yet on the booth, but is expect to arrive later on in the fair. The S120 was not being shown to press, only distributors, as we are told that it features some unique design features, in particular the lateral damper and central tweak adjuster, that Serpent are keen to keep out of sight from competitors. As you can see from the picture we did take of the car, Serpent have also designed and produced new wheels for the 1/12th car which we are sure will work on other similar chassis’.

What we did get to see was the S240, this 1/24th scale pan car is a very simple, all carbon fibre car that takes tiny LiPo cells to power its miniature motor. The best thing about these cars is the body shell, the Group C type shell sports all sorts of scoops and air intakes, all just for looks. Serpent will also release an ALMS version as well as a GT/Touring car type body. Serpent were also displaying the 08 versions of their S960 and S720 as well as the company’s new line of Central designed GT bodyshells. The F180 was also on show as well as the S400 touring car, however there are no new updates on these cars for 2008.

Other items of note on the stand was the Xceed line of tools, tires and products.

Team Orion CRF 21 US Spec Engine

Team Orion have officially announced the Team Orion CRF 21 US Spec buggy engine, which is the result of intensive testing with the collaboration of team drivers Ryan Cavalieri, Jorn Neumann and Philipp Guschl. With the introduction of new types of cars with lighter components, it appeared that the existing CRF engine was too powerful, so they created a new specification engine. This new motor keeps the incredible torque but delivers the power in a smoother way as requested by the team, while at the same time getting better mileage efficiency.

Trinity have introduced a new C.O.T. class which stands for Cost Oriented Technology. Created for racers that just want to show up and race without worrying if they have the latest and greatest technology to be competitive. It is a great new option for tracks and large events that want controlled handout style racing, at an economical price. The C.O.T. Power Package includes a blue hard-cased 3200mah 30C Intellect LiPo pack with a Deans connector (R.O.A.R. legal) and a specially designed 13.5T or 21.5T Pulse brushless motor (R.O.A.R. approved) developed by Trinity, featuring a one-of-a-kind marked shaft and fixed timing adjustments, making tech inspection easy and giving race directors the freedom to set timing rules to fit their racing programs. For the Snowbirds there is a C.O.T. class for oval, and road, with oval using the 21.5 motor and Touring using a 13.5 motor.

Morganti takes FORGASS Rd5 win

The 5th round of the FORGASS Florida State series took place last weekend at the tricky Fort Myers track. In qualifying Serpent racer DJ Apolaro showed everyone the fast way around the track bumping his teammate Paolo Morganti from the top spot in the last round with a very fast 25 lap qualifier. The start of the A Final did not go well for the top qualifier, his engine flaming out as the cars were staging for the start meaning he had to start from the pit lane almost a full lap down. Paolo immediately took the lead and began to pull away from most of the field. Meanwhile DJ was on a mission and by the second round of fuel stops had worked himself into 2nd position where he stayed until 2 minutes remaining when he crashed heavily in the chicane, ending his race. This left Paolo unchallenged to the end, coming home ahead of Shepherd racer Scotty Gray in 2nd, while DJ managed to still take 3rd spot, such was his advantage at the time of the crash.

Serpent 966 1/8th scale chassis

Serpent have release some CAD images of their new 1/8th scale chassis, the 966. Retaining the same front end as on the 960, the main innovations happen at the rear end where there is a completely new assembly. More accessible and stronger, the rear bulkheads are made from aluminium and sport a seperate set of blocks for both the 2-speed shaft/brakes and the lower suspension arm mounts. The rear axle eccenters have been made from aluminium and together with the anodising, the new materials help to create a perfect alignment for all the moving parts. Other changes include a carbon fibre upper suspension arm mount, new chassis plate & chassis stiffeners and updated, smoother shock absorbers.

Q. How are you doing ?
A. I am doing ok, feeling fine, after some nice xmas celebrations with friends and family in Germany and New Year parties in Holland

Q. What changes occurred in Serpent in 2008 ?
A. Many things happened, some planned, some unplanned. Most is back on its feet now and we have some exciting stuff in the pipeline. We now have a design/marketing office in Heemstede, Holland and production and central distribution is made from SerpentAsia based in HongKong. Serpent Europe will start officially this month, based in Germany and SerpentAmerica openend november last year already, so all structure is in place to service our Serpent fans worldwide.

Q. The Serpent S120 1/12 scale car has been received really well, so what can we expect next product wise ?
A. Serpent will release the Serpent 966 1/8 scale car in february. I have worked on this design, mainly rear end changes, 2nd part of 2008 and production is running now. I really loved racing the 960, but this new version is even better. We will also release the Serpent S240, 1/24 scale electric pan-car (Lipo powered) in February too, more details to follow, a real fun-car for indoor-use. At this moment I am working on a complete new Serpent 1/10 scale gas car to be released around summer and its one of the best designs I have done so far … at least that’s my opinion. Billy Easton our US based designer has been working on the Serpent 1/8 buggy in 2008 and most of the design is finished now, and proto-typing getting started. Billy will proceed with a truggy-design and then if the market-development makes is feasable maybe a new touringcar after or an electric buggy who knows ….

Q. When will you race again ?
A. At the Winternats in USA (feb.2009) I will race 1/8 with the new Serpent 966. I can hardly wait ! Then we have some test to do in Europe, the German races, at least one 1/8 EFRA GP and ofcourse the 1/8 Worlds in Swiss this summer. We have some strong aces for the Worlds with Cristiani, Fantini, Domanin, Green, Sahashi brothers, some other (unexpected) talents …. and I still count myself in too
